Malta Work Permit

For non-EU citizens intending to work in Malta, the initial step involves applying for both a visa and a work permit. If your intended stay for work is short-term (not exceeding three months), you will need a Short-Stay Visa, also known as a C Visa or Schengen visa. These are issued with different entry allowances based on your travel needs:

National Long-Stay Visa or D Visa

This visa permits individuals to stay in Malta for more than 3 months. It is a mandatory requirement for all non-EU citizens who wish to work in Malta for an extended period.

Work Permit in Malta

The Single Permit is the primary type of work permit required for non-EU citizens to be employed in Malta for longer than three months. It combines the right to work and reside in Malta into one document, often referred to as the e-residence card. Typically, the employer submits the application for this permit on behalf of the prospective employee. The Single Permit is usually valid for one year, and the processing time generally takes between two to three months.
